-ectomy: Surgical Procedure Dictionary

-ectomy  is used as suffix and meaning “Surgical removal of a particular organ”.

Procedure are divided on the basis of body system:

Reproductive System

Female

  • Cervicectomy:   Surgical removal of the of the uterine cervix.
  • Clitoridectomy: Surgical removal of the of the clitoris; female circumcision.
  • Oophorectomy:  Surgical removal of one or both ovaries.
  • Salpingoophorectomy:  Surgical removal of  an ovary together with the Fallopian                                                 tube.
  • Salpingectomy: Surgical removal of the Fallopian tubes.
  • Hysterectomy:  Surgical removal of all or part of the uterus.
  • Vaginectomy : Surgical removal of all or part of the vagina.
  • Vulvectomy :  Surgical removal of all or part of vulva.
  • Myomectomy : surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus.

Male

  • Vasectomy : surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception.
  • Penectomy : surgical removal of Penis.
  • Orchiectomy : surgical removal of one or both testicles.
  • Prostatectomy : surgical removal of all or part of the prostate gland.
  • Posthectomy : The surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis or prepuce.
  • Gonadectomy : surgical removal of an ovary or testis.

Musculoskeletal

  • Bursectomy : Surgical removal of a bursa.

Amputation

  • Hemicorporectomy: Surgical removal of the lower half of the body.
  • Hemipelvectomy:  surgical removal of the entire lower extremity through the sacroiliac and the pubic joints.

Nervous system

CNS

  • Decompressive craniectomy: Surgical removal of part of skull.
  • Hemispherectomy: Surgical removal of cerebral hemisphere (half of the brain).
  • Anterior temporal lobectomy: Complete surgical removal of the anterior portion                                                               of the temporal lobe of the brain.
  • Hypophysectomy:  Surgical removal of the hypophysis (pituitary gland).
  • Amygdalohippocampectomy: Surgical removal of the amygdala and                                                                                   hippocampus (parts of the brain: temporal lobe).
  • Laminectomy: Surgical removal of lamina (the back part of the vertebra).
  • Corpectomy: Surgical removal of all or part of the vertebral body.
  • Facetectomy: Surgical removal of a portion of spine growth.

PNS

  • Ganglionectomy : surgical removal of a ganglion
  • Sympathectomy/Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy:  surgical removal of a                                       portion of the sympathetic nerve trunk in the thoracic region.
  • Neurectomy : surgical removal of all or part of a nerve.

Ear

  • Stapedectomy: Surgical removal of all or part of the stapes of the middle ear,                                    followed by replacement with a prosthesis.
  • Mastoidectomy: Surgical removal of the mastoid air cells.

Eye

  • Photorefractive keratectomy: Surgical removal of portion of the anterior part of the cornea, which changes the refraction by creating a new radius of curvature.
  • Trabeculectomy : Surgical removal of part of the eye’s trabecular meshwork and                                     adjacent structures.
  • Iridectomy : a surgical procedure to remove part of the iris.
  • Vitrectomy: a surgical procedure to remove the vitreous humour from the                                       eyeball.

Gastrointestinal

  • Glossectomy : A surgical removal of the tongue.
  • Esophagectomy : A surgery to remove part or all of the esophagus.
  • Gastrectomy : A surgical removal of a part or the whole of the stomach.
  • Appendectomy:  A surgical removal of the vermiform appendix.
  • Proctocolectomy:  A surgical removal of the rectum and all or part of the colon
  • Colectomy: A surgical removal of all or part of the colon.
  • Hepatectomy:  A surgical resection (removal of all or part) of the liver.
  • Cholecystectomy: A surgical removal of the gall bladder.
  • Pancreatectomy/Pancreaticoduodenectomy: A surgical removal of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, the proximal jejunum, gallbladder, and part of the stomach.

Respiratory

  • Rhinectomy: A surgical removal of a nose.
  • Laryngectomy : A surgical  removal of the larynx.
  • Pneumonectomy : A surgical removal of  a lung or part of a lung.

Endocrine

  • Hypophysectomy:  A surgical removal of the hypophysis (pituitary gland).
  • Thyroidectomy : A surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid gland.
  • Parathyroidectomy :  A surgical removal of one or more of the parathyroid glands.
  • Adrenalectomy : A surgical removal of one or both (bilateral adrenalectomy) adrenal glands
  • Pinealectomy : A surgical removal of the pineal gland.

Renal

  • Nephrectomy : A surgical removal of one or both of the kidneys
  • Cystectomy : A surgical operation to remove the urinary bladder  a surgical operation to remove an abnormal cyst.

Lymphatic

  • Tonsillectomy: a Surgical operation to remove the tonsils.
  • Adenoidectomy : Surgical removal of the adenoids
  • Thymectomy: Surgical removal of the thymus gland.
  • Splenectomy: a surgical operation involving removal of the spleen.
  • Lymphadenectomy: Surgical removal of one or more groups of lymph nodes.
  • Adenectomy: Surgical removal of all or part of a gland.

Breast

  • Lumpectomy: A surgical removal of lump from the breast.
  • Mastectomy: A surgical operation to remove a breast.

Bone/joint

  • Coccygectomy: A surgical removal of the coccyx.
  • Ostectomy: A surgical procedure involving the removal of bone.
    • Femoral head ostectomy: A surgical procedure that removes the head and neck from the femur.
  • Astragalectomy: A surgical operation for removal of the talus bone (astragalus) for stabilization of the ankle.
  • Discectomy: A surgical removal of the whole or a part of an intervertebral disc.
  • Synovectomy: A surgical removal of the joint lining.

Random

  • Embolectomy: A surgical removal of an embolus.
  • Endarterectomy : A Surgical removal of part of the inner lining of an artery, together with any obstructive deposits, most often carried out on the carotid artery or on vessels supplying the legs.
  • Frenectomy : A Surgical removal of a frenulum, a small fold of tissue that                                            prevents an organ in the body from moving too far.
  • Ganglionectomy : A surgical removal of a nerve ganglion.
  • Gingivectomy : A surgical removal of the gingiva.
  • Lobectomy : A surgical removal of a lobe of an organ such as the thyroid gland, lung, liver, or brain.
  • Myomectomy : A surgical removal of uterine leiomyomas (fibroids).
  • Panniculectomy : A surgical procedure to remove a panniculus, or excess skin, from the lower abdomen.
  • Pericardiectomy : A surgical removal of part or most of the pericardium.
