Fine needle aspiration is a procedure to collect fluid from the suspected area for a pathological examination.
The procedure is done with a fine needle and long syringe to suctioned the sample.
Remind this Sample is collected by syringe so there are no cutting or scratching of tissues.
FNA take place with or without imaging guidance. As imaging guidance is needed for confirmation of the correct site from which sample is collected.

Coding Bite
- Fine needle biopsy is used for cytological examination whereas core needle biopsy is used for histological examination.
- Fine needle biopsy without imaging guidance for first lesion is coded as CPT 10021 and same day if FNA perform on other lesion then other lesion reported with 10004 for each lesion (List separately) .
- FNA with imaging guidance will coded with type of technique used. No need to code radiological code separately.
- If FNA and core biopsy performed on the same day and same site then we will code only FNA.
